CV Joint Repair

Sensing a clicking sound around your wheels when you steer your car around corners? It might be time to get your Constant Velocity (CV) joints repaired. In case you're not too sure of what exactly are your car's CV joints allow us at Tommy Transmissions to tell you about them: They basically maintain equal pressure on your front wheels even when you're turning corners.
All front-wheel drive cars and many rear-wheel and four-wheel drive cars have CV joints on both ends of the drive shafts, and they are divided in inner and outer ones. The inner CV joints connect the drive shafts to the transmission, while the outer CV joints connect them to the wheels. These devices are needed to transfer the torque from the transmission to the drive wheels at a constant speed, all while accommodating the up-and-down motion of the suspension. In front-wheel drive cars, ball-type CV joints are used on the outer side of the drive shafts (referred to as the outer CV joints) and tripod-type CV joints will mostly be used on the inner side (referred to as the inner CV joints).
CV joints are actually a very loyal part of your automobile as they don't require maintenance and can last for a prolonged period. It is not uncommon to see vehicles with over 300,000 miles that still have their original CV joints. However, as any other car part, they may eventually cause issues. Most commonly, the problems arise when a CV joint's protective boot gets cracked or damaged, which allows the lubricant grease to come out and dirt and moisture to get in. This corrosion can cause your CV joints to wear off faster and eventually get damaged. The first victims tend to be the outer CV joints, as they have to endure more movement.
This is why it is important to have your transmission system checked regularly, so any issues can be detected before they become a headache or safety hazard. We at Tommy Transmissions can do a full check-up and, if necessary, replace your CV joint's protective boot with a brand new one, as well as lubricating it.
If the CV joint is broken beyond repair, you can count on Tommy Transmissions to do a great job replacing it with a new one. Come and see what we can do for you!
